Who was George Read as a delegate from Delaware?

George Read, not George Washington but George Read. He was one of the many delegates who signed the Constitution we all treasure today. George Read was very important in the eyes of the wise, they knew that he was an amazing man. In fact, he was the only signer who voted against the proposal of independence.  It's hard to determine why he didn't want to sign it, he had a very good working past with the state of Delaware.

George Read was born on September 18, 1733. He had a good childhood and became an early graduate. He had the wealth enough to actually graduate and start a career. At the age of 15 he went on with his studies of law. It wasn't until his later life, age 41 actually, that he started to become known to the world.

In 1774 he was elected to the continental congress, he finished his term in 1776. From there he became a Member of the Delaware Constitutional Convention. He stayed there for about a year then moved on to be an acting governor of Delaware. George Read had quite the life of work. Three years later he became a judge on the court of appeals. Then he was Delaware's state senator for a year and then continued his work as a judge.

His work didn't stop there though, he became a US Senator from 1789 to 1793. He wanted to work his way to the big groups so he became the Chief Justice of Delaware from 1793 to1798. George Read had probably earned his credit's by all the work he was doing. It seemed like he was going to fight for what he wanted. George Read was also appointed as an attorney General of 3 Delaware Counties.

George Reed was know widely. So when British took John McKinley , the current governor of Delaware at the time, he was put up as a replacement. It did take a hold of George that he became ill and had to retire. He stayed home the rest of his long life and died September 21st, 1798.
